Typical applications of Spring-Energized Seals
Spring-energized seals are specialized sealing components developed for challenging environments involving high temperatures, corrosive media, lubrication difficulties, and requirements for low friction. By combining various PTFE composites, engineering plastics, and corrosion-resistant metal springs, they meet the increasingly rigorous and diverse demands of industries such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, petroleum, chemical machinery, valves, vacuum pumps, pressure vessels, hydraulic cylinders, and aerospace equipment. Typical applications include:
1. High-temperature sealing
Many modern industrial hydraulic cylinders require high-temperature seals—such as those used in die-casting, metallurgy, kilns, and automotive engines—where temperatures can reach approximately 300°C.
2. Low-temperature sealing
Sealing for liquefied nitrogen, LPG, liquefied CO2, liquefied oxygen, etc., at temperatures as low as -200°C.
3. High-pressure sealing
Ultra-high-tonnage presses, high-pressure waterjet cutters, and air compressors; pressures can reach up to 400 MPa.
4. High-speed sealing
High-speed rotating shafts (speeds up to 30–40 m/s) and high-speed reciprocating cylinders (extension/retraction speeds up to 15–20 m/s).
5. Sealing for special media
High-temperature steam, seawater, brake fluid, acids, alkalis, etc.
6. Low friction
Typical examples include servo-controlled hydraulic cylinders.
7. Long-life sealing
Wind turbine pitch-control cylinders and construction vibration-damping cylinders.
8. Large-bore cylinder sealing
Cylinders for cranes and heavy-duty forklifts.
9. Hygienic sealing
Spring-energized seals are now widely used in applications involving contact with food and pharmaceuticals.
10. Rapid-response cylinders
These seals require smaller installation grooves, allowing for lighter structural components. Combined with low frictional resistance, this significantly enhances the cylinder's dynamic performance, enabling the production of superior rapid-response cylinders.
